Sundae 21/8/11 :: Brett J + Zach Salar

Out and about in our fair city, we find ourselves amongst good company all about the place. There is a strong group of musicians and DJs, all very friendly, and all great at what they do. Through the month of August we’re opening up the decks to some renowned Brisbane partnerships, friends and musical co-conspirators who are particular close, in sound and sensibility, who compliment and challenge each other, and if nothing else, can keep each other line. This week we sit down with Zach Salar and Brett J.

Both Zach and Brett are no stranger to the late night party, each arriving by a different route but both have built on a genuine love for house music, technical proficiency at the mixer, and a dedication to the wellbeing of the dancer. Together they share a drive to deliver maximum effect to the party, and encouraging the associated big smiles, arms in the air and lost marbles that are the hallmarks of a well trained deck technician in their element. Between the two of them, they have brought this effervescence to GPO, Ahlambra, Monastery, Barsoma, and indeed each have turned out a soulful afternoon session for us here at Sundae.

Not enough to find themselves at all the city’s hotspots over the weekend, the boys put together a broadcast during the week to keep in touch with their fans, at the time the first of its kind in Brisbane. Each week, the Nightvision podcast attracted thousands of listeners, eager to hear Brett and Zach’s particular slice of Brisbane dance music flavour, and keep up to date with their fresh and forthright take on the state of the house sound in our little city.

This week at Sundae finds us in the company of another pair of skilled spinners that shared a house at some point, or at the very least spend enough time hanging out that they are comfortable taking noise complaints from the neighbours. Zach Salar and Brett J drop by to drop in some funk filled afterhours sound crossing deep house, disco and other good vibes. So come and get amongst the usual good cheer of a lazy afternoon with the sublime Sundae sound. See you by the riverside.

Sundae 14/8/11 :: Benn Hopkins + Jason Rouse

We have some great friends at Sundae, who help us do what we do, keep us in line and bring the good times each time they appear. This week’s guests, Benn Hopkins and Jason Rouse are both experienced DJs ready for any club, and great supporters of our party that over the years that we have turned to time and again for their dedication, enthusiasm and exquisite record collections.

In Brisbane town, Benn and Jason have hit one spot after another, between them covering every worthwhile dancefloor. Family, The Met, Barsoma, Zuri, Laruche, Alhambra, GPO, you get the picture, between the two of them, Brisbane has received a healthy dose of deep, soulful, bumping, funky, proper house for over a decade. Individually, Jason and Benn are both class DJs in their own right, but as close friends, they share musical inspiration, and push each other further with a deep commitment to providing quality party experiences to Brisbaneites.

It is not just on our shores either, both of them proudly represented us at the original Sundae party in Philadelphia, and at the renowned Miami conference, both impressing the Americans and developing a little black book that has seen them play alongside Robert Owens, King Britt, Charles Spencer, Derrick Carter, Andy Caldwell, Jay J and more once back on their home turf.

Join us this week as we welcome our close friends back to the decks to share the fruits of individual dedication to the cause, and a special musical friendship built on a shared appreciation of quality house music. The last days of winter are upon us and we are enjoying the good company, great cocktails and the warm glow of a pleasant afternoon spent hanging out with friends. We’ll see you by the riverside.

Sundae 7/8/11 :: Brazen + Mr Gaunt

This month at Sundae, we are preparing a special series of parties that showcase DJs who compliment and challenge each other. These artists share a friendship, and musical influence, and will allow us a small glimpse into their shared musical experience. First off the block this week are our close friends, and longtime supporters of Sundae, Brazen + Mr Gaunt.

The Sundae parties have traditionally been a place for the rotation of Brisbane’s club DJs to ease off a little, and play some tunes that wouldn’t normally fit into their regular club sets. Though for Brazen + Mr Gaunt, their regular appearances at our party have become a natural progression of their sound. As they’ve matured as artists, they’ve allowed their funk, garage, soul and early breakbeat influences to shine through, though delivered with the same intensity that they have come to be known for at spots like Moonbar and Family.

Highly regarded for their forward thinking club breaks and peak time cuts, the boys dominated the Empire for a time with slick delivery and high intensity performance. Outside the usual club circuit though, and the two have developed in fine style a musicality that is appreciated by dancers from all walks. Each appearance at Sundae has produced an inviting mix of classic recordings, experimental rhythms and feel good fun.

Join us this weekend for the first of our presentations of slick Brisbane DJ partnerships, as we follow Brazen + Mr Gaunt through the afternoon into a world of bumps, bounce, basslines and broken beats that will set the scene for another glorious afternoon in the park. We’ll see you by the riverside.
