Respected by punters and chin-strokers alike for his delivery of upfront sounds across the genre spectrum, you can set your clock by Cosmo’s party-rocking reliability. He comes from a pedigree of DJs that entertain without any other agenda than keeping the dancefloor going.
Cosmo’s superb set-crafting abilities have established him as the warm-up DJ of choice for progressive house superstars whenever they roll through Brisbane – Sasha, John Digweed and Hernan Cattaneo just three of the names to receive Cosmo’s patented treatment.
His warm-up slot for Sasha and Digweed in 2006 had some local fans claiming he should join the legends in the DJ booth for their encore, whilst his set in support of Diggers in 2005 was so warmly received no one was really sure if the rapturous applause was for Diggers stepping up to the decks or Cosmo’s own performance. And when he dropped Bedrock’s ‘Heaven Scent’ during a roof-raising set in support of Sasha in 2004, the man himself actually hit the dancefloor –one of the rare occasions another DJ has got him reaching for the lasers!
TimeOff Magazine 2009 Writers Poll rated his warm-up for Sasha as “local gig of the year” and Hernan Cattaneo rated his Brisbane gig as best show of 2009, in DJ Mag.
Crafting slow-building warm-ups isn’t the only weapon in the Cosmo Cater arsenal, with his much-vaunted diversity seeing him hold down a seven year long residency at Brisbane bar and club Jade Buddha, playing a more chilled and funky sound. He’s rocked Sydney and Melbourne and clubs all over Brisbane on most weekends. He has also become a fixture of the festival circuit, with slots at the 2005 Big Day Out Boiler Room, Summafieldayze, Future Music Festival, Stereosonic and more. Held in high regard by his peers for having a broad yet cheeky musical taste and the technical skills to back it up, Cosmo is regarded as one of Queensland’s finest.
Cosmo stays ahead of the local pack by looking beyond the current releases when playing his DJ sets – spinning old tunes in a new context is one of the many tricks up his sleeve. This passion for uncovering hidden gems and discovering new ones helps him rock diverse crowds, be it laying down smooth disco and house at bars or slamming down big tunes at festivals. 2011 saw Cosmo support a who’s who of quality international DJs as well as adding disco and drum ‘n’ bass to his genre versatility.
When the game is on the line, you go to your pinch hitter. The guy that unassumedly chalks up the runs, and the bigger the occasion, the better he plays. Commonly known as the “go-to” guy, he might get less attention and hype than the flashier members of the team. However, he delivers – consistently, and with a workman-like quality. Cosmo Cater is one DJ you want in your corner.
