Sundae 26/2/12 :: Butterz

One of the great things about running our little party each Sundae is the chance to let loose great DJs in an environment that is a little more relaxed and laid back than the bump and grind of a Friday or Saturday night out in the city. The scenery and smiles lend a hand in creating a warm environment for a skilled selector to bring a more eclectic sound, and bring out some tunes that are more suited to the afternoon vibe. Our guest this week, Butterz has taken that as an invitation to open up his record box and let rainbows pour out in a way that would please the most discerning party people.

Butterz joins us for the first time having navigated only the best clubs in our fair city. Alhambra, Empire, Family, Laruche, Uber, X + Y.. You see where we’re going with this. The guy can’t be contained within four walls either, deploying monster tunes at Parklife, Good Vibrations, BBQ Breaks and more. Most notably though, he has created a movement of his own, reestablishing broken beats as a sopisticated way to club in a city seduced by four to the floor dance music. His club night Shifty has become a dominant force in Brisbane clubbing and hoisted its founder to the forefront of the scene, holding his own next to visiting internationals such as Roots Manuva, Dexter, Koolism, Rennie Pilgrim, Boca45 and more.

This Sundae we can expect wide variety of sounds crossing funk, disco, house, hip, trip + dub hop. Butterz has an innate understanding of how to provide for a party, so get in early to reserve your real estate, grab a cocktail and let Butterz and the Sundae crew sort out your Sundae. See you by the riverside.

Sundae 19/2/12 :: Frank Li

Last Sundae was started with the usual sunshine and then sudden rain brought us all together and the watt management opened up the venue to so many who decided to stay on despite the rain. Rain or shine it’s a great spot to watch mother nature do her thing and we enjoyed the change. This week Frank Li from Auditree provides the soundtrack to Sundae by the river.

A collector of music for as long as he can remember, Frank Li got the DJ bug 3 years ago. His eclectic taste has driven him to appreciate and play everything from Disco to Techno and for Frank as long as it’s groovy & classy it’s good! The genress influencing Frank’s DJ style these days are disco edits, italo disco & mid tempo house. Names like Steve Lawler, Ben Watt, Greg Wilson, Tim Sweeney and Morgan Geist, Frank explains, have been a big part of the influence and inspiration for his love of all things DJ. For almost 2 years DJing has taken a back seat to his promoter role for the local Auditree brand who over this time have hosted some of the biggest parties Brisbane has seen. Frank believes that good music is just that, no matter what the genre and Auditree is an extension of that belief.

A gentleman of the DJ scene Frank Li is not one to brag about his DJ skills and so we are glad we managed to convince him to play for Sundae again. We can expect his set to be slow, groovy, disco tinged but still fun, perfect for a Sundae afternoon and I know Frank is keen to get the promoters hat off for a day and the headphones on for a relaxed set and a beer or two by the river at Watt.

See you by the riverside!

Sundae 12/2/12 :: Soul Sista Selectas

As we enjoy these long lazy days, you could be forgiven for thinking that the summer season could last forever. These sunny days and sultry nights take us right back to school holidays when one could easily forget what day it is, and it is this feeling that we try to recreate each week at our party. Continuing our sizzling summer season this week, we are joined by the Soul Sista Selectors, our girls in the groove Anna Sonnenburg and Chantal, bringing a bag of tunes each that will take you away from your worries and back to those days hanging out in the park by the river.

Across the city, both Anna and Chantal have been blazing a path of party fun in recent years. Both girls made their headline debut at the seminal club night Therapy with breakout performances that would see the club industry sit up and take notice. In the years since, they have each positioned themselves with strong showings at Press Club, Zuri, Barsoma and more, shining a light on both their technical ability, and instinctive track selection, impressing crowds and fellow DJs alike with their genuine enthusiasm for the sport.

At Sundae we have been proud to present our Vinyl Throwdown days as a way of showcasing the history of our art, and that subtle, indescribable appeal of needle on wax. Cool Hand Luke will be there to get things in motion, but the stars this week are definitely Chantal and Anna, throwing down tune after tune of funky, soulful, deep and disco house. As always all are welcome. Whether you are from out of town, or right at home, young, or just young at heart – you know where to find us. We’ll see you by the riverside.
