Sundae 23/2/14 :: Vinyl Throwdown ft Gavin Boyd

Turntables at the ready: it’s time for a Vinyl Throwdown! Sundae is a big supporter of vinyl records, and our Vinyl Throwdown days are a chance for local DJs to take a trip through their record collection and we get to hear some sweet tunes. This week, Gavin Boyd.

Over more than a decade, Gavin has built a solid local following in Brisbane. Fans have appreciated his technical approach, while still keeping the movement of the party at the forefront of his mind. Called upon for headlining local residencies and supporting international artists, Gavin is keen to fill clubs and get them moving with his highly developed flavour of soul and hip hop. Engaged to set up proceedings for overseas guests such as Jill Scott, Mos Def, Nile Rodgers and Questlove, Gavin keeps his skills sharp, building on a long foundation of turntablism and battle mixing.

Between flicking record crates for the right track to get everybody grooving, Gavin has continued to work hard in the studio. Gavin first appeared as a Radio DJ many years ago, though now has moved more into production, his musical tastes and use of technology constantly evolving as he develops his craft. Soon to see a release on Jazzanovaโ€™s highly influential Sonar Kollektiv label, which will see him take his music to a larger global audience. Gavin has begun making forays further afield too with club and festival performances in the Maldives, Phillipines, Netherlands and Sri Lanka.

Down here at the party, we know Gavin has the moves to make us groove, so we are going to grab a drink and reserve some real estate as we expect an afternoon of tune after funky tune. Join us this week as we welcome Gavin Boyd for a Vinyl Throwdown. We’ll see you by the riverside.

Sundae 16/2/14 :: DJ Khan

The long summer days are still with us for a few weeks yet, and you know Sundae isn’t about to slow down anytime soon, so get on board this week as we welcome a new member to the Sundae family, DJ Khan. Some may already be familiar with Khan’s involvement in the music industry in Brisbane through his influential role as music writer for the Courier Mail, and this week we will have a chance to take a trip through his personal record collection. For many years Khan has been teasing out the thoughts of visiting musicians and DJs, and that exposure to new music and musical ideas has had a profound influence on the way he selects records.

Growing up, Khan was introduced to records in a way familiar to many DJs: curiously flipping through Mum and Dad’s records. Fortunately in Khan’s case, his parents had some pretty sweet taste in music, and that has no doubt influenced his own selections over time. Now collecting for almost two decades, Khan has amassed a significant collection of fine music and a few short years ago decided to take up spinning as a way to share all the great tunes he had found. Now dabbling in production too, Khan is poised to join the ranks of the musicians he has followed so closely with his own creative output.

Down here at Sundae we are likely to hear a great mix of tunes from modern soul, to vintage rnb, funk, old school hip hop to more club friendly cuts in the house area. No doubt, Khan has had first hand experience talking and mixing with many the great musicians of our time, and his record collection is a reflection of his own choices culled from decades of exposure to great music. Join us this week as we welcome DJ Khan to the Sundae party. We’ll see you by the riverside.
