Sundae 1/6/14 :: Kenny Dope Afterparty

It’s getting cooler in Brisbane now, but the nights are heating up with heaps of great events around town. This week in particular the Sundae team are super excited for the arrival of master DJ and producer Kenny Dope on our shores, and with such a huge party happening on Saturday night no doubt some of that revelry will spill over to our little afterparty on Sundae.

Spinning records for three decades or so, or in other terms, about as long as modern clubbing has existed, Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzales is a master at work. Actually, he is one half of Masters at Work, and over the many years that he has been making clubs heave worldwide, he has heavily influenced the modern state of dance music with his trademark jazzy Latin deep house.

Of course, this is right up our street so we were touched when we were asked to support the man when he plays Brisbane this Saturday night. On the bill too are some of our little city’s most experienced record selectors, alongside our hosts Cool Hand Luke and Chantal representing the Sundae familiar.

This Sundae is our party, though we will be catering to those who wish to relive (or continue with) the night before. Latin heavy house, bossa vibes, funk and disco will set the soundtrack to the rest of your weekend, or indeed the best of your weekend alongside the beautiful surrounds of New Farm Park, and the camaraderie of your pals here at Sundae. Join us as we celebrate the arrival of Kenny Dope, Master at Work and tastemaker extraordinary. We’ll see you by the riverside.

Sundae 25/5/14 :: Global Grooves ft Lady Bluesabelle

Sundae has friends in high places. And low places. In cold places and warm places too. All around the world, the extended Sundae family collaborate and create together based on a shared love of…well, music from all around the world. While some of our DJs concentrate on specific niches, others take a broader view, and in some cases, selecting their tunes from not just all around our little blue marble, but back through time too. Squeeze your suitcase shut, and have your passports ready as we welcome to the party Lady Bluesabelle and some long distance musical travel this week as we board the jetset that is “Global Groove.”

Formerly of Brisbane, now based in Cambodia, and with her head in the clouds, Lady Bluesabelle has developed a culturally exotic sound best described as “local music from out there.” Bringing enchantment and joy to ears for over fifteen years, Lady Bluesabelle’s sound crosses continents and eras, taking in flavours from early hip hop, dancehall, swing, world jazz, and more. From Cuban, Bossa and Afro beats, to Caribbean treats, and European sounds crossing from French lounge to the Balkans, all delivered with heart and finesse. It isn’t just her record collection with the air miles either, Lady Bluesabelle has taken her sound to the world too, performing in Spain, England, India, the United States, and of course Cambodia, where the Global Grooves headquarters now reside.

From our home at Sundae here in Brisbane, we try to reach out internationally, and we are super pleased when fresh tunes, and friendly folk arrive from across the sea. Of course, our hosts Cool Hand Luke and Chantal will be on hand to welcome our guest, and to get things up to cruising altitude before we take in the view on our afternoon Global Grooves tour, all without leaving the sublime surrounds of New Farm Park. No luggage is required, just your good selves, some good friends, and an open mind ready to receive to some Global Grooves from an experienced DJ returning home. We’ll see you by the riverside.

Sundae 18/5/14 :: House Classics ft Jason Rouse

Here at Sundae we’ve seen a few changes in Brisbane over the years but one thing has remained constant, steady and unwavering. Jason Rouse behind the decks dishing out tune after tune of an evening. Overseeing the rise of clubbing in this fair city from his office in the center of the room, Jason has managed proceedings in the city’s nightspots for near two decades now.

A quick flip through the resume reveals a list of basically every worthwhile soundsystem in town. From early jaunts at The Tube, Viva, Port Office and so on, to more modern jumpoffs including Family, Monastery, The Met, Zuri, Bacchus and more. Rouse has several thousand hours behind the wheels so it was natural for us to turn to him to lead proceedings this week as we take a retrospective look at some of the classic tunes that have stood the test of time. Having been at the forefront of dancefloor development for so long, it’s safe to say Rouse is House.

Looking forward, Jason’s calendar is booked solid, both with residencies and high profile guest spots all around town. Clearly the guy is doing more than a few things right, and central to the technique is his trademark sound, a refined but forward thinking, funky, bumpy boogie know about the place as Rouse House. From the deep relaxed grooves, to big room movers, Jason can work with any situation. An experienced, professional hand behind the decks, and an all around top guy on the dancefloor side too, Jason is a great addition to the party and we are glad to have him with us this week. Additionally, this week marks the anniversary of Jason’s yearly trip around the sun, so if you feel inclined, please come and wish him Happy Birthday in between tracks.

This Sundae will be a warm up of sorts too, as Jason and the Sundae team prepare for a huge party coming up with Defected arriving on our shores alongside some not so well known dude calling himself Kenny Dope. We’re just kidding, this party will be huge, and with Cool Hand Luke, Chantal, Jason and many of the Sundae family supporting, it will be a great day for house music in Brisbane. Come and talk to us this week if you want more details about this great event coming up, and to catch some of those house classics that have made us groove over the years. With master selector Jason Rouse in the .. er building, and of course Luke and Chantal on warmup things will get heated very quickly. We’ll see you by the riverside.

Sundae 11/5/14 :: Motown Party

Sunday the 11th of May is Mothers Day and with Watt putting on a special menu for our Mums we thought a day of classic Motown sounds would be the perfect accompanyment. You can expect a day of end to end Motown classics that we hope will keep Mums smiling and toes tapping into the Sundae evening.

Arguably the most famous record label on the planet. Represented by a list of artists that have become household names, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, The temptations, Diana Ross, Martha & the Vandellas, the Jackson 5, Gladys Night and The Pips, The Commodores, The Four Tops just to name a few.

In the history of music there are few genres that stand out as more than music, that represent a movement and a reflection on society and the richness of the human spirit. Mowtown represents the soundtrack of an era of social change for the better. Motown itself became a cultural icon. As the most successful African-American owned and operated record company- and business-in the U.S., it symbolized a new day: its energetic product reflected the striving toward progress and optimism of a long-oppressed people and the nation as a whole. See you by the riverside this Mothers Day.
