Sundae 28/9/14 :: Mr Sparkle

No stranger to our party, our guest this week Mr Sparkle has been a long time supporter of Sundae, and a close friend of the crew. Indeed, the halcyon days of Brisbane’s own superclub Family were built around the long and prosperous Saturday night partnership with our very own Cool Hand Luke that lasted for many years. For those who don’t know though, let’s help you get acquainted..

One of Brisbane’s hardest working party starters, engineering all manner of social interaction in rooms big and small, DJ Mr Sparkle seeks to create a convivial atmosphere through funky, soulful goodness and big beats to tease out big smiles and feed sweaty dance floors. Taking on any party situation, Sparkles’ backs himself with a lifetime of interaction with music, calling on influences such as a music teaching mum, early years of soul and funk immersion and roller skating discos, through to the Manchester sounds of the 90’s, acid jazz and old school hip hop. All the while incubating an interest in the emerging rave, house and club sounds of the time.

For over ten years, Sparkles has been a mainstay at the best of Brisbane’s club rotations, taking on The Met, The Family, Press Club, The Wickham, Uber, GPO, Main Squeeze, Monastery and Jorge amongst many others. In the warmer months, Sparkles fills his days with outings such as Summerfieldayze, BBQ Breaks, Future Music Festival, Parklife and the like and performs under various guises, including Dubs… Down Under Beatmasters- his live collective, performing at Byblos Portside.

Mr Sparkle is without a doubt an unstoppable party force always bent on shenanigans, and carries a weekend stamina that would put most of the younger generation of DJs to shame, so we can expect the fun to continue through the afternoon and well into the night. This will be Sparkles first outing in the new digs too so he is eager to get to work on the crowd early and turn on an afternoon of just solid spring vibes. Join us this Sundae with as we carry on in proper form with fine quality afternoon selections. See you in the  sunshine.

Sundae 21/9/14 :: Cosmo Cater

In Brisbane, it is difficult to pass by a weekend without hearing something about our guest for this week. Since the beginning of dance music time, Cosmo Cater has been at the forefront of our industry, supporting, developing and just generally lapping up the music culture in this fair city. As it happens, Brisbane is putting on quite a show at the moment, the spring weather is perfect, we are in a new venue, so the time is right to invite Cosmo around to bring this meeting to order.

Cosmo is one of the steadiest hands in Brisbane: Famous DJ standing next to him, thousands upon thousands of people losing their minds in front of him, and yet he is the very model of cool, calm and collected. This prowess has been displayed fairly much everywhere there are turntables- Family, Barsoma, Empire, Birdees, and almost every festival someone has tried to sell you a ticket to- he’s played with a finesse that has made him the go to man for international warmup duties. Cosmo’s extreme attention to detail and ability to get the job done at the business end of the night has found him on speed dial for promoters bringing out the likes of Hernan Cattaneo, John Digweed, James Lavelle and more. His presence in the booth enough to make even the headliner more than a little nervous.

Down here at Sundae, Cosmo has become a party favourite, showing both the depth of his record collection and his ability to handle any gathering of party people, night or day. You can expect an ear catching deep, soulful disco and house set that will put you in a great mood for the rest of the week. Be sure not to miss him when he joins the party this Sundae, in our new digs in the Gasworks complex. See you in the sunshine.

Sundae 14/9/14 :: Andrew Lynch

One of the great things about living in Brisbane is the ability to go out of a weekend and catch our local djs throwing down at an international level. The talented locals have much to do with our little city coming of age, and we are proud to have such serious selectors amongst us. Our guest this week is one of the hardworking homeboys that make it all happen each week and if you have been clubbing at any time in the last ten years in Brisbane, chances are at some stage you stepped onto Andrew Lynch’s dancefloor.

As part of the highly organised Uncle @ Family outfight Andrew threw it down weekly to one of the most in touch crowds in Brisbane. Able to maintain at the peak time with individual flair he added Monastery and Uber to the list of large rooms that took a thumping from him, showing his adaptability to crowds of all persuasions. Not enough to keep things humming in the big rooms, he adapted to the small parties well too, taking on a roster that included venues like Zuri, Alhambra, Jade Buddha, Limes and many more. Flipping between deep soulful selections and big chugging jacking house, Andrew takes to the decks with the keen attention to detail, but with a warm and inviting sound that will catch anyone up in his feel
good beat.

In the downtime between his various engagements, Andrew is found in the studio, pushing the soulful deep house style further with his own explorations of the sound. With a little help from our friend DJ Freestyle, Andrew made the jump from apprentice to producer and is steadily developing his own take on the house sound. This week sees Andrew arrive at our party with an eager grin, ready to take on our little gathering, and while we can look forward to his notable deep house sound we expect that he will stray from the straight up path to throw in a few around the edges from his own personal listening stash. The new venue sounds terrific, so join us this week as we welcome Andrew Lynch back to Sundae. We’ll see you in the sunshine.

Sundae 7/9/14 :: Benn Hopkins + Sharif D

Sundae is a collaborative effort made by a few dedicated DJs in Brisbane and one of the less public faces of our team is hitting the turntables this week to remind us how all this Sundae business got started.

The man behind the international mechanics of our events, Benn is a qualified party starter and reliable hand across the nocturnal hours in the city’s clubs. Introducing international tourists each week at his Zuri parties didn’t hurt his resume, and often sees him sorting out the logistics of getting the evening started at Barsoma, Laruche, Bacchus and so on too. Benn is at least partially responsible shaping the sound down here, from slow and groovy r’n’b jams to deep instrumental hip hop, upbeat funky breaks and soulful deep house beats.

In addition to all this busyness behind the decks, Benn has been responsible for maintaining the connection to the motherland, and has appeared at the original Sundae party in Philadelphia, one of only a handful of Aussie DJs to do so. This international connection has also seen Benn responsible for bringing out some of our great overseas guests.

Sharif D is no stranger to our party either; he was seen lurking around our 10th birthday party amongst others. It’s no surprise though, Sharif is known locally for unleashing his saxophone at clubs like Zuri, Alhambra, The Met and more, adding the spice to any party he shows up to. His musical talents extend to the keys as well, and sharing production duties with De La Roche in Dirty Polite, together they are recreating disco and house on their terms, from vintage golden sounds to new school future producers, and a shared love of boogie, funk, and soulful, diva house music.

Benn Hopkins is an experienced operator and eager to take the Sundae party for another spin. We can expect deep goodness from Benn on the funky disco tip alongside the smooth flow from Sharif D. Together, these two cats will open up the program at our new venue Reef Seafood and Sushi in the new Gasworks complex in Newstead. Join us this week! We’ll see you in the sunshine.

Sundae is on the move ::

Brisbane’s favourite Sunday session “Sundae” is moving to new venues. We will be taking up residency at “Reef Seafood + Sushi”, part of Newstead’s new Gasworks complex. Sundae has provided the soundtrack to thousands of Brisbane families’ Sunday afternoon over the years, and Reef will host the first of a series of new events for the team.

From our original home at Watt in Brisbane’s Powerhouse precinct, to high profile events at Brunswick Social, Bacchus, The Fox Hotel, Barsoma and more, Sundae has continued to define outdoor clubbing in Brisbane, with cutting edge DJs presented in a family friendly environment.

The move to “Reef” will see an increase in our special events capacity, and accordingly we will continue to provide high quality events, with international DJs and acts alongside Brisbane’s finest local talent.

We invite you to join us this Sundae as we move to our new location. We’ll see you in the sunshine.
