Proper :: Amir Alexander [USA] :: Friday 29th May

Drawing influence from the cities, sounds, scenes and clubs that have heavily influenced us, PROPER arrives to take Brisbane Clubbers back to the deep underground with a special event that will make you sweat. Taking over Sway for the night, the Proper team will put on a party reminiscent of previous gatherings at the club with the cult like following on Constance St.

Spinning a mostly vinyl set, our guest for the evening, Amir Alexander will be well supported by some of Brisbane’s finest, and the booth setup optimized for the heavy duty throwdown that will occur there. The room will be equipped with a fine custom Turbosound system, and the venue retrofitted to resemble the previous incarnation of the Constance St club that many people will remember fondly. The aspect of the DJ will be returned to the mezzanine level, to better simulate the feel of the room that many of the Brisbane underground have in their hearts.

Amir Alexander ::

Amir Alexander arrives at Proper on a hot streak, having had a terrific year taking on clubs around the world. In between his busy schedule though he has found time to put the finishing touches on a long player that will drop just before he arrives in country.

Following a string of EP releases that have served to broaden his audience, and his own flavoursome output, Amir’s work on record stands to provide a lasting archive of his sound. On the surface, house and techno, in the undercurrent though is where Amir shines, displaying subtle productions techniques that allow his audio full form across the spectrum from minimal, stripped down studies of frequencies, to lush and adventurous soundscapes. Drawing on his own experiences and influences, but produced with “lovers of electronic music” firmly in mind, “Love & Fear” feels like us to be a direct invitation into his studio.

Amir will follow the release with a hectic tour beginning not 10 days after the drop with us here in Brisbane, so we are fortunate to be among the first to hear fresh tunes from him. We are sure the Proper faithful will be right into this, and will show Amir a warm welcome to both his visit, and his new album release “Love & Fear.”

Making his debut in a simmering Chicago scene in the early ’90s, Amir Alexander wasted no time impressing the city with his gritty, chugging, foward thinking, bumpy sound drawing influences from his hometown as well as Detroit and New York. A student of the art, Amir took to both production and selection disciplines, punching out well received releases during the day, while grinding the Windy City’s dancefloors by night.

Amir’s apprenticeship in the electronic scene came to fruition with the regarded Experience EP, and set him on the way to strong releases on Plan B, Argot, Hype Ltd, Secretsundaze and Sascha Dive’s Deep Vibes. Over time, as his remixing duties and collaborations amassed, he launched his own imprint Vanguard Sound in order to better control the direction and feel of his output.

On the road, Amir has taken his underground goodtimes to all points of the globe, including key appearances at Panorama Bar in Berlin, Rex and Concrete in Paris, Arma 17 in Moscow, Secretsundaze in London and more. This visit will be only his second trip to our little corner of the ocean though, and we will be receiving him with enthusiasm as he takes to the floor for the first Proper.

Please join us on Friday May 29 for a Proper underground party at SWAY, 22 Constance St Fortitude Valley.

Chikashi Nishikawa ::

sundae 150111 gasometer 2 bio chikashi 2

Chikashi Nishiwaki’s musical adventure began all the way back in 1987, and for over quarter of a century he has delivered only the finest audio to discerning ears. Hailing from the Fukui region right on the coast near the centre of Japan, Chikashi has based his operations there while maintaining an international presence. In his home country, he is renowned for sophisticated dancefloor jazz, boogie, Afro, Latin, and Brazilian soulful beats, always presented on vinyl. He developed his own sound alongside Japanese luminaries DJ Krush, Kyoto Jazz Massive and Toshio Matsuura and continues to this day with deep vinyl explorations seeking out the right tunes to “for people to dance and be happy.” Indeed, his own club, “Tree Cafe” in Tsuruga is now approaching it’s 8th year, and is regarded by audiophiles and serious record collectors as a fine example of a club where music comes first. Our very own Peter G is set to appear at the club’s 8th Anniversary party, no doubt attracted to the attention to detail found in every stage of the party process, from atmosphere to speaker design to music policy.

Some of our older Brisbane clubbers may remember Chikashi’s first visits to Australia about a decade ago, where he joined the Good Vibrations tour. Basing himself in Brisbane at the time, he was a favourite at some of our little city’s eclectic independent parties and held his own across many different party situations. Internationally too, Chikashi has toured extensively and often attracted the attention of artists such as Gilles Petersen, Jazztronik and Nicola Conte who have subsequently visited him at his club in Japan. As a producer too, Chikashi has provided remix talent for a number of artists from deep dub sounds to jazzy breakbeats, boogie and more on respected Japanese labels such as Mighty Highness, Ak47 and Audiosutra, among others.

Thomas Prime ::

Thomas Prime is the split personality of club promoter Thomas Gazal who some of us will have found ourselves in shades of trouble on the dancefloor with before. Bringing an enthusiastic approach to Brisbane’s nocturnal venues, Thomas quickly settled in to dual roles as presenter and selecter. Across numerous nightspots and local festivals Thomas has now punched tickets at Future Music, Stereosonic, Parklife, Listen Out and more.

Arriving out our soiree with a funky, chilled but infectiously bouncy vibe, Thomas Prime is joining the ranks of Brisbane DJs as a mature party operator, and brings with him a bumping playlist for the roadtrip across the afternoon in the kombi.

Cliftonia ::

sundae 150111 gasometer 2 bio cliftonia

Rapidly rising amongst the ranks of Brisbane’s nocturnal selectors, Cliftonia brings a boogie mix of house, disco and party beats. An impressive schedule including Family, Alfred & Constance, Limes, Capulet, Laruche, The Fox, Woolly Mammoth, Soleil Bar and more has kept him from the party, but arrives for his debut at Sundae with bags of the good stuff: enthusiasm for the party, and sweet groovy tunes.

Now that we’ve finally got him on the ground here, Cliftonia will be taking over driving duties in the bus on his first day out so get ready to buck and swerve once he gets behind the wheels.

Mr Sparkle ::

sundae 150111 gasometer 2 bio sparkle

One of Brisbane’s hardest working party starters, engineering all manner of social interaction in rooms big and small, DJ Mr Sparkle seeks to create a convivial atmosphere through funky, soulful goodness and big beats to tease out big smiles and feed sweaty dance floors. Taking on any party situation, Sparkles’ backs himself with a lifetime of interaction with music, calling on influences such as a music teaching mum, early years of soul and funk immersion and roller skating discos, through to the Manchester sounds of the 90’s, acid jazz and old school hip hop. All the while incubating an interest in the emerging rave, house and club sounds of the time.

For over ten years, Sparkles has been a mainstay at the best of Brisbane’s club rotations, taking on The Met, The Family, Press Club, The Wickham, Uber, GPO, Main Squeeze, Monastery and Jorge amongst many others. In the warmer months, Sparkles fills his days with outings such as Summerfieldayze, BBQ Breaks, Future Music Festival, Parklife and the like and performs under various guises, including Dubs… Down Under Beatmasters- his live collective, performing at Byblos Portside.

Russian on Percussion ::

Russian, also known about these parts as Peter G. has long been a close member of the Sundae family, bringing both dj sets and live instrumentation to the party. Also known about town for his many activities, not least of course his long relationship with Cloudland, Press Club and Family.

Peter is a versatile musician across many instruments and disciplines and we imagine that he will be weaving this golden goodness in amongst the party people bringing the boom bap to the party in his usual swinging style.

Cool Hand Luke ::

sundae 150111 gasometer 2 bio luke

Cool Hand Luke has been a central fixture of Brisbane’s nightlife, and some daytime activities too, for nearly a decade and a half now. In that time he has racked up an incredible list of residencies including Family, Zuri, Cloudland, Alhambra, Alloneword, Therapy, and many, many more. His enthusiastic approach to the party, smooth, effortless mixing and solid selection have endeared him to thousands of fans in this little city, and more than a few around the world.

Called upon to support a list of visiting international artists far too numerous to list here, though many of you will remember warm ups for Terrence Parker, Jimpster, DJ Spinna and Nile Rogers in recent times, and indeed just the other day with Terry Farley. Luke is the man behind the van so once he gets her revving, you lot better get on board.

Chantal ::

sundae 150111 gasometer 2 bio chantal 2

Chantal first came to attention thumping funky house out of the park at Therapy and just kept on keeping on from there, taking on Limes, Zuri, Press Club and all sorts of other parties too. Originally a dancer, Chantal brought a unique perspective to dance music, and brought a technical prowess to support her groovy tunes. Brisbane clubbers quickly came about, and Chantal too has amassed a significant number of people that have wobbled to her music.

Last week saw Chantal at the wheels fronting Derrick Carter and taking the crowd for a ride there, so getting behind the wheel of the kombi should be no problem for her. Sundae is Chantal’s wheelhouse so no doubt we are in for a treat.

Benn Hopkins ::

sundae 150111 gasometer 2 bio benn 2

Benn has been organising, promoting and DJing for well over a decade, Benn has supported the likes of Sonny Fodera, Derrick Carter, Kinky Movement, Kenny Dope, Random Soul, Joshua Heath, DJ Spinna, Ron Carroll, Jay-J, and Seth Troxler, all while maintaining the back end production needs of the venue and of course, his involvement here with us at Sundae.

On the festival circuit Benn has played at Future Music, Soaked, Listen Out, Valley Fiesta and Creamfields, as well as this Benn has held down spots at numerous Brisbane venues such as Laruche, Zuri, Press Club, Black Bird and Bacchus. Wider than this Benn has played interstate as well internationally at the Miami Music Conference and Philadelphia beside some of the biggest names in house music. Benn is also one of a select few artists to have been chosen to appear on Hed Kandi’s Australian DJ roster, most recently alongside Alton Miller a few days ago. Hope he’s ready to be the designated driver though, as he’ll be driving Ruby later in the day.

Sharif D ::

sundae 150111 gasometer 2 bio sharif d

Sharif has become renowned around the Brisbane club circuit as the ‘sax man’, jamming and adlibbing with a large host of Brisbane’s top DJ’s and musicians. Throughout his performance career he’s played at a range of high profile festivals and clubs, including: Future Music,Good Vibrations, Summerfieldayz, Global Gathering, Valley Fiesta and Stereosonic, alongside Sydney clubs: Goldfish, Tank, Chinese Laundry and Yu. On the Brisbane scene he held down residencies at every quality club you can think of.

Sharif has had releases from labels Onelove, Hi Tech , Integrity, Diventa Music (Germany) and Summer Rain Recordings (UK). Through these releases his music has varied from downtempo, chillout, acid jazz, deep house, tech House, breakbeat, electro, trip hop and funk. More recently collaborating on releases and remixes from folk and world music, todisco to drum’n’bass. Sharif’s been hanging out here with us at Sundae a couple times now so it will be great to see him back in the wagon.

Sundae 28/12/14 :: Chris Wilson

Well it’s almost done. 2014 is packing it’s bags and we’re in the home stretch towards the new year. Before we get to that though, this week is of course our Christmas party, and this week’s guest, Chris Wilson, is bring sacks full of musical treats to distribute.

Heavily involved in the Sundae family from the outset, Chris Wilson is an experienced DJ and promoter in Brisbane, with a serious record collection and the technical skills in the booth that bring the boogie from the bag to the bodies. Known for his stewardship of the Family, Empire, Cloudland, Press Club and Birdees operation, Chris has experience across all kinds of lounging and dancing, so we know you are in safe hands.

In more recent times, Chris has been enjoying the life of a freelancer, taking in nightspots up and down the coast, as well as a few noted appearances in town, including Blackbird, Capulet, and the recent Soaked event, as well as checking in with us here at Sundae. His ability to sort the party mood of any venue has been called upon many times over his two decade career, so we are fortunate that Chris chooses to fly with us so frequently.

With the Sundae elves Cool Hand Luke, Benn Hopkins and Chantal supporting, Chris will be slinging funk, disco, house, instrumental bits, vocal tunes, chilled out numbers and more serious dancing equipment for the Sundae faithful. As we know the Sundae family is very international and inclusive, so if you have your entire extended family in tow, or you need a family to take you in, please join us this week as we celebrate the close of the year with our friends. We’ll see you in the sunshine.
