Sundae 21/12/14 :: Hakan Henry

Summer is in full effect here at Sundae, and we’ve got more tasty treats on the way to sate your thirsty selves, this week in the form of our supreme Turkish connection, Hakan Henry. After a rocky start, the storms have cleaned out and cleared the way for another sublime season in Brisbane, and now that the sun is starting to shine on, the Sundae gang are keen to get back to swinging in the sunshine.

Hakan Henry arrived in Brisbane only a few short years ago, and quickly found himself folded into the Sundae family. Our musical interests align in so many ways, and every visit to Sundae for Hakan has been a proper get down, both at our weekly events here at Reef, and previously at Watt, to sharing the set up duties for international artists such as Terrance Parker and Jimpster at our more heaving parties. Clearly the Sundae faithful have adopted Hakan as their own, and he brings a unique perspective to our international family.

Fresh faced in the Istanbul scene in 1994, Hakan has played an important part in the development of the house underground there, Thousands of dancers grooved to Hakan at nightspots of renown including Crystal, 11:11, and Maslak 2019, and visiting delegates Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, Fred Everything, Jt Donaldson and more imported fresh overseas sounds, all enabled by Hakan’s hungry beat smuggling antics. Hakan has definitely put the work in there in Turkey and his since had his passport stamped in clubs in New York, Chicago, London, Ibiza, Lucerne and Sofia too.

Totally down with the house sound, of course Hakan has a few flavours and flourishes to distinguish himself too, and will be bringing a selection of influences to play with your eardrums. Chantal, Cool Hand Luke and Benn Hopkins are in the building too, knocking out tune after tune of the finest funk, boogie, soul, disco and house to while away the day with, and of course our resident mixologists and chefs here at Reef will be knocking them out too: platter after platter of the finest seafood and cocktails in Brisbane to support your lazy expedition through the afternoon.

Get on board as we welcome back to the tables Hakan Henry and the crew dishing it up this Sundae. Christmas is around the corner too, so bring your friends and family, or you are welcome to join ours. We’ll see you in the sunshine.

Sundae 14/12/14 :: Jason Rouse

Here at Sundae we’ve seen a few changes in Brisbane over the years but one thing has remained constant, steady and unwavering. Jason Rouse behind the decks dishing out tune after tune of an evening. Overseeing the rise of clubbing in this fair city from his office in the center of the room, Jason has managed proceedings in the city’s nightspots for near two decades now.

A quick flip through the resume reveals a list of basically every worthwhile soundsystem in town. From early jaunts at The Tube, Viva, Port Office and so on, to more modern jumpoffs including Family, Monastery, The Met, Zuri, Bacchus and more. Rouse has several thousand hours behind the wheels so it was natural for us to turn to him to lead proceedings this week.. Having been at the forefront of dancefloor development for so long, it’s safe to say Rouse is House. Our afternoon with Rouse though will take a more wholesome approach, including funking grooves from across the spectrum that contributed to that beautiful boogie.

Looking forward, Jason’s calendar is booked solid, both with residencies and high profile guest spots all around town. Clearly the guy is doing more than a few things right, and central to the technique is his trademark sound, a refined but forward thinking, funky, bumpy boogie know about the place as Rouse House. From the deep relaxed grooves, to big room movers, Jason can work with any situation. An experienced, professional hand behind the decks, and an all around top guy on the dancefloor side too, Jason is a great addition to the party and we are glad to have him with us this week. Jason is all about his record collection and with sounds for every mood, the afternoon’s proceedings are under firm control with Jason at the mixer.

Jason’s frequent partner in crime, Benn Hopkins, will be about the venue too preparing the business of the day alongside Chantal and Cool Hand Luke laying out the early funky goodness, and helping you navigate the end of your weekend with style and grace. Sundae has a big party season coming up this year, with Terry Farley arriving soon, the Kombi van out and about at festivals, and more on the home turf for the Sundae crew, summer is turning out to be a tip top heatwave of tune after tune and we love you so come and hang out with us. See you in the sunshine.

Sundae 7/12/14 :: DJ Miro Grgic

Well what a spectacular showing last week as we shifted up the road a bit into the centre of the plaza. Ruby the Kombi Van was certainly feeling the love, and I have a feeling we’re going to see a bit more of this concept in the future. All the DJs had a blast too, and going by some of your reactions the feeling was mutual, so expect us, Sundae to be working on new and innovative ways to sling party tunes out in the sunshine.

This week we move back into the restaurant- we can’t be too far from these delicious platters. Resident DJs Chantal, Benn Hopkins and Cool Hand Luke are setting up the party to welcome guest DJ Miro back to the Sundae tables. Drawing from a solid foundation of a collection of smooth swinging tunes, a respectable resume at nightspots around the city, and technical skills in the office to put it all together, Miro arrives at the party super ready to throw down fine recordings all afternoon.

Drawing from the deeper, groovier, more organic end of the musical spectrum, Miro puts the pieces together in a considered way, with the needs of the party at the forefront of his mind. Behind the mixer, Miro is a confident selector, and previous visits to Sundae have shown an experienced DJ and mood setter working the room just right with a chilled but funky groove that will allow the Sundae faithful to stretch their legs or just stretch out in the sun. Perfect.

Residents in support will switch up different bits of disco, funk, soul, hip hop and house as the mood dictates, and keep a watchful ear over the party as we navigate the afternoon. Reef Seafood is coming to our rescue every week with a menu that is just right for our appetite too, so please join us this week as we officially enter the summer season here at Sundae. We’ll see you in the sunshine.

Jad + The Ladyboy ::

Jad & The Ladyboy carry his music into a soulful house manner while in the meantime disco as influence is their part-time home. To this date it was unheard of a solo Australian producer to not take part in live band and in the case of Jad, he represents one fourth of the indie-dance band MITZI and he also starts in an Indie Pop band for one of his other side projects called Twiggy Lashes.
For his debut release on Exploited, Step in my direction” he got support by Duke Dumont, Pete Tong, Maxx Soundsystem, Tensnake, Karotte, Mirror People, The Rapture, Till Von Sein and many more.

Subzilla ::

Blending the creamiest of Bass music and leading head honchos in the Brisbane music scene, Subzilla has been making unsuspecting clubbers and party goers loose their boogie juice on the dancefloor for over ten years. They’ve had the opportunity to play some of Australia’s best festivals (Parklife, Good Vibrations, BBQ Breaks & BlahBlahBlah, & Stereosonic) alongside some of their favourite artists and have proven themselves to be some of Brisbanes hardest working Dj’s, successfully holding down solid sets in basically every one of Brisbane’s best nightclubs.

Cool Hand Luke ::

Cool Hand Luke has been a central fixture of Brisbane’s nightlife, and some daytime activities too, for nearly a decade and a half now. In that time he has racked up an incredible list of residencies including Family, Zuri, Cloudland, Alhambra, Alloneword, Therapy, and many, many more. His enthusiastic approach to the party, smooth, effortless mixing and solid selection have endeared him to thousands of fans in this little city, and more than a few around the world. Called upon to support a list of visiting international artists far too numerous to list here, though many of you will remember warm ups for Terrence Parker, Jimpster, DJ Spinna and Nile Rogers in recent times.

Chantal ::

Chantal first came to attention thumping funky house out of the park at Therapy and just kept on keeping on from there, taking on Limes, Zuri, Press Club and all sorts of other parties too. Originally a dancer, Chantal brought a unique perspective to dance music, and brought a technical prowess to support her groovy tunes. Brisbane clubbers quickly came about, and Chantal too has amassed a significant number of people that have wobbled to her music.

Sundae 23/11/14 :: DJ Katch

Here at Sundae we have a few friendly faces that keep us motivated to show up each week and one of our regulars, DJ Katch knows a little bit about party starting so we enjoy having him here with us. Often seen relaxing at Sundae of an evening after a busy weekend in the nightspots, Katch sometimes plays records for us too, and every time is a masterful display of funky business. Katch is a keen collector and a devastating selector, grooving living rooms, big rooms, outside rooms and in particular Sundae with his infectious party funking vibes.

From early in the game, Katch has positioned himself as a hip hop explorer, along the way collecting multiple DMC titles, been one of 2Dogs, crossed the country with the notorious party outfit Resin Dogs, and hosted the long running Phat Tape show on 4ZZZ. The misadventure and mischief continues on the road, where Katch performs touring duties for Regurgitator, in amongst his own busy schedule that sees him criss crossing the globe.

Katch’s studio output is notable too, with a bunch of Resin Dogs albums under his belt, and a few guest appearances as well, his ability to blend up that special somethin’ somethin’ endearing him to fans around the globe. Brisbane of course claims him as their son, and Katch’s fan base in this fine city are well acquainted with his ability to do sensual things to your ears, and turn out in numbers for his appearances at fine establishments across the city, particularly for his international warmups for the likes of Afrika Bambataa, Jurassic 5 and Roots Manuva.

This will be Katch’s first visit to the new venue, and we are lucky to have him find some time for us here at Sundae. We’ve been told to expect Klassic Katch, playing a vinyl only set of delicious treats and creamy beats. Cool Hand Luke and Chantal will be on hand to get things promptly moving in a funky direction before we get stuck into a classy afternoon of hip hop, breaks and disco grooves presented on wax by a local master. We’ll see you in the sunshine.
