Sundae 16/11/14 :: Scott Walker

Scott Walker is known to many of us here as a professional man about town, personally tending to gatherings all about our little city with suitable flair and untouchable track selection. Although known primarily for his serious club focused house and techno, Scott’s Sundae sessions have become something of a collector’s item and a popular way to end a week. This week, we’ve invited Scott back to take us with him on another afternoon adventure.

For more than ten years Scott has established himself as one of Brisbane’s dominant dancefloor forces, showing up in all the fine establishments such as Family, Monastery, Empire and it’s Moonbar, Alhambra and Barsoma. It is not only his undeniable skill as a DJ that sees him at the forefront of the Brisbane scene, but his genuine love for Brisbane’s underground club culture, almost crossing into obsession, that endears him to so many fans. Indeed, over the eight years that his Drop night dominated the nightlife, Scott has seen many changes in this fine city, and has even forced the direction a fair amount on his own too. As part of the highly organized Auditree outfit, Scott brought his extensive experience and support to a new guard, and together they successfully hosted some of Brisbane’s most revered events of recent times, most notably supporting Hernan Cattaneo and Carl Craig. As a serious vinyl collector Scott is well read on his music history, while also adopting new technology and musical ideas, and his afterhours sessions cross deep house, disco old and new, through to more organic sounds as well as intelligent electronica.

His adaptability is regarded too, regularly taking his one man club heaving show on the road, with appearances around the country and now dipping his toe in the Asian club circuit; always sure to return home in time for the festival season, where he is called upon by everyone from Big Day Out, Global Gathering, and Gatecrasher to Summafieldayze, Global Underground, and Slinky.It would be ridiculous of us to list all of Scott’s high profile supports, the list runs over several pages. So let us summarize: Scott does the big jobs and does them right. Some of the biggest names in dance music have all stepped into a club expertly simmered by Mr Walker. Each set is a skilled display of dancefloor mechanics, rolling through vintage to modern sounds to bring about entangled throes of barely behaved dancers.

What more can we say? Scott is simply in touch with how club’s should work. It is a real treat to have him back at the controls. The man likes to get down with the chilled out sound too so we can expect some fine hip hop, funk, boogie and what not to get everyone swaying. Cool Hand Luke and Chantal will set the scene for all the good people. Then Scott has free reign on the proceedings of the afternoon, and no doubt will have a bag of super sweet audio confectionery to please everyone’s tastes. Join us as we welcome back Scott Walker to the Sundae soiree. We’ll see in the sunshine.

Sundae 9/11/14 :: Thomas Prime

As summer approaches we are kicking up a gear. The warmth in the afternoon and the lazy sunset are going to make for some great parties over the next few weeks. Joining us at the controls this week is Thomas Prime, the split personality of club promoter Thomas Gazal who some of us will have found ourselves in shades of trouble on the dancefloor with before.

Bringing an enthusiastic approach to Brisbane’s nocturnal venues, Thomas quickly settled in to dual roles as presenter and selecter. Across numerous nightspots and local festivals Thomas has now punched tickets at Future Music, Stereosonic, Parklife, Listen Out and more.

Arriving out our soiree with a funky, chilled but infectiously bouncy vibe, Thomas Prime is joining the ranks of Brisbane DJs as a mature party operator, and brings with him a playlist across genres to lay out over the long afternoon. He joins Cool Hand Luke, Benn Hopkins and Chantal in putting together the funky, soulful business end of your weekend so don’t be shy.

Join us this weekend as we welcome Thomas Prime to his first Sundae flavour tasting and we’ll see you in the sunshine.

Sundae 2/11/14 :: Vinyl Throwdown

What a week! Brisbane’s summer is storming towards us and things around here are quickly heating up. We are well and truly in the swing of things at our new home in the Gasworks, so it’s about time to Throwdown!

As you may know, we are pretty keen on vinyl records here at Sundae. The medium has become synonymous with DJing, and with good reason. There is something magical about the transmission from record to needle and then to the speaker that is pleasing to the ears and good for the soul. The kind of stuff that we like to get down to are often found at the bottom of a box of the big, black discs and we spend a lot of time down in the musty dust to bring you only the best music from vintage grooves right through to the forward thinking future sounds of today.

This week of course, the digital world will be left behind as we revisit some of our favourite record releases. The Sundae team of Cool Hand Luke, Chantal and Benn Hopkins have decades of experience between them, trawling the world for the tastiest fat tuna tunes and bringing the catch back to serve up on the plates for you. Of course, we like to keep the place bouncing so we will be keeping things fun, laying down funk, disco, soul, boogie, deep house and hip hop bits. Our hosts at Reef will match our catch too, whipping up a storm of seafood and serious cold beverages to keep you all sated, and give you the energy to keep up with us through the afternoon.

Come and get amongst the good times as we get analog this Sundae. We’ll see you in the sunshine.

Sundae 26/10/14 :: Kieron C

Now we’ve been rolling a few weeks at our new home, we’re starting to get a little more confident with what we can get away with. The glorious warm spring weather is gently teasing Brisbane with hints of the summer to come, the people are out to play, and up jumped the boogie-man with the the funky sway. Enter Kieron C.

A long time friend of the clan, Kieron is generally nearby when an experienced party starter is called for. Kieron has decades of experience in Brisbane clubs, a long list including Empire, Family, Barsoma, Kerbside, Laruche, Zuri etc etc. It’s a really long list. His unique take on dance music has flowed onto many other Brisbane DJs through his influential role working the desk at Rockinghorse Records, and shaping the modern club sound in this city, both through his own solo DJing, or as part of the notorious Vinyl Slingers outfit. More recently too, Kieron has been involved in bringing a number of important artists to Brisbane, like Greg Wilson and John Morales, cannily fitting them into his tight schedule around the numerous international artists that seek his support when they arrive in Australia.

Cool Hand Luke and Chantal will be ready to welcome Kieron as he arrives at the new venue. The three of them will then go to town on you all slamming down tune after tune of the finest, boogiest funk, soul, disco, hip hop and house. Sundae mission statement right there. Come and get involved as we are only half the party, the other half is you. We’ll see you in the sunshine.

Sundae 19/10/14 :: Rikki Newton

One of Brisbane’s more colourful characters, Rikki Newton is a familiar face in many of our favourite haunts. Well schooled in the trade, Rikki came up through Press Club, in the early years of this decade, following an inspiring trip to London that flicked his switch after he found himself recovering at Lazy Dog.

Over the next few seasons Rikki worked out of the Uncle rooom as part of the ‘dream team’ lineup that dominated Brisbane’s Saturdays from 2006-09. Always keen to do his own thing though, Rikki moved himself, and a little party idea that he was incubating, to Barsoma. Rikki’s Subtrakt parties have now become something of record in Brisbane. Always keen to test the limits of dancers, and Liquor Licensing’s tolerance of his post-sunrise antics, Subtrakt has seen some key names in deep house roll through, including Steve Bug, Charles Webster, Vincenzo, Dixon and more. Now in it’s seventh year, Subtrakt has taken a number of venues to a new level, including Bowler Bar, Capulet, and of course their spiritual home at Barsoma, amongst a number of boat parties, bowls sessions, and other outdoor activities.

In more recent times, Rikki has been reaching further afield, with appearances in Sydney, in particular, Sash, the Sunday morning party, and an involved interest in the upcoming Andromeda festival mean Rikki’s keeping his schedule full. In between all these engagements, Rikki finds time to put his head down in the studio and process some of the great music he uncovers each week. Once we locked in our little date with the man, away he went to start selecting some tunes, so we know there are some sublime sounds coming our way.

Rikki’s enthusiasm for the sport can be seen everytime he takes to the decks, and his deep house style will make you bounce too. Rikki’s tunes cross electronica, disco, instrumental hip hop and deep house, moving from mood to mood in an effortless slide across the landscape of the afternoon, so do yourself a favour, and get involved. Chantal and Cool Hand Luke will be in effect, setting the scene for the return to the controls for Rikki Newton. A regular figure in the Sundae crowd, don’t miss him when he takes to the Sundae control room this week. See you in the sunshine.

Sundae 5/10/14 :: Chantal and Cool Hand Luke return!

In recent weeks we have seen a few changes around the Sundae HQ as we’ve settled in to our new home. Winter has made way for a beautiful spring, the tunes have been pumping courtesy of our great guests, and of course you shiny happy people, getting about in your finest and bringing the good cheer. A couple of faces have been missing from all this merriment though, and this week we welcome back our hosts Chantal and Cool Hand Luke, returning from a month long adventure that saw them bring the funk to crowds in Italy, Spain and Cambodia. Along the way, they met up with many of our international friends, lost themselves, found themselves again and basically had a grand old time. However, it is time to put them to work so we can hear all the cool new tunes and influences they picked up along their travels so let’s clean up the office a bit ’cause the bosses are back in town.

Cool Hand Luke has been a central fixture of Brisbane’s nightlife, and some daytime activities too, for nearly a decade and a half now. In that time he has racked up an incredible list of residencies including Family, Zuri, Cloudland, Alhambra, Alloneword, Therapy, and many, many more. His enthusiastic approach to the party, smooth, effortless mixing and solid selection have endeared him to thousands of fans in this little city, and more than a few around the world. Called upon to support a list of visiting international artists far too numerous to list here, though many of you will remember warm ups for Terrence Parker, Jimpster, DJ Spinna and Nile Rogers in recent times.

Chantal first came to attention thumping funky house out of the park at Therapy and just kept on keeping on from there, taking on Limes, Zuri, Press Club and all sorts of other parties too. Originally a dancer, Chantal brought a unique perspective to dance music, and brought a technical prowess to support her groovy tunes. Brisbane clubbers quickly came about, and Chantal too has amassed a significant number of people that have wobbled to her music.

After a few weeks break, our heroes should be rested and ready to let rip. Their first time in the new venue, Cool Hand Luke and Chantal will bring the boogie to Reef Seafood and Sushi, and of course you fine people need to get on board this groove train. Weaving through soul, disco, funk, deep house, boogie and more, you all know what to do. Buy the ticket, take the ride. (Actually, we are free entry, but you know what we mean.) The journey sets off from 2pm. We’ll see you in the sunshine.
