We cover a lot of ground at Sundae, owing to all the great music that we like, from vintage sounds to modern beats. Our guest this week Richard Shimmy has spent his life maintaining a careful appreciation of both, and each time he pops the lid on his record bag we are treated to an excursion through only the very best tunes. So let’s dive in and take a look.
Shimmy is one of the Brisbane British expats crew that dominated Brisbane house clubs in the later part of the last century. At Press Club and Family among many others, he was allowed the free reign to unleash his club sound at the peak time, and an equally fun and funky lounge set for the downtime. His attention to detail in the mix, although sometimes overshadowed by his impressive selection, has been honed over several decades in the booth, maintaining a cutting edge house sound in the club and becoming a firm favourite at local parties.
The first time Richard Shimmy came to party with us at Sundae, the faithful were blown away. His impressive northern soul set, mixed by hand, remains one of our most downloaded performances, a tribute not only to the timeless records Shimmy brought along for the day, but his loving care in presenting it to our people. A Shimmy party can set you in the right mood for the the rest of the week, and his return to Brisbane could see us travel through soul, funk, r’n’b, boogaloo and he gaurantees us an hour of the Soulful House sound he was famous for here for so many years. So get along, feel the vinyl warmth ward off the winter wind, and join us by the riverside. We’ll see you in the sunshine.
Back by popular demand, Richard Shimmy returns to give us another demonstration of his turntablist and selector/collector skills. Shimmy wowed us last time with eclectic soul set all played on 45’s and this time we can expect a broader offering with Soul/Northern/R&B /Funk/Boogaloo and maybe even a little bit of Ska! Whatever he chooses to play we are sure there will be enough musical surprises and to keep the chin strokers happy.
Richard got his DJ moniker from his highly successful event in the UK called “Shimmy” which led to his involvement with the Legendary Hacienda nightclub. A scouting trip to Australia for the club around ’98 and, for whatever reason, he decided to stay and became a regular fixture in Brisbane since that time, playing at almost every venue around with Hosting and guest appearances on a number of local radio programs. A resident of Family’s Cocktail Lounge for over 4 years and as a festival regular he never disappointed!
Northern soul is a music and dance movement that grew from the British mod scene, with roots in northern England in the late 1960s. Northern soul music is black American soul music and the Motown influenced sound of the time with a focus on the rare and less mainstream artists.
Richard is another of our English ex-pats and Brisbane DJ scene legend returning to Brisbane for a special one-off, vinyl only set. Incorporating an array of genres from funk through the many shades of soul music including Motown, 60s R&B, Northern Soul and Acid Jazz on dusty old 7 inch records! Richard has been a regular fixture in Brisbane since 1998, playing at almost every venue around and has hosted and been guest on a number of local radio programs. A resident of Family’s Cocktail Lounge for over 4 years and a festival regular he never disappointed. We are very excited to have him back again, for what should be a Shimmy set to remember!.
