Sundae 18/3/14 :: Uncles Throwdown

This week our Sundae hosts are absent as they take the Brisbane sound to South East Asia, rolling through Cambodia and Thailand, and have left the party in the capable hands of the ‘Uncles’. Shannon L Marshall, Willie Costa and Haiku first came to mainstream attention in Brisbane as members of the highly organised Uncle outfit that occupied the top level of Family. Each Saturday saw an almost cultlike following drawn to the venue’s infamous Pod room to get frisky in the high pressure environment that pushed DJs to the limit and drove dancers wild. Fresh house and techno music, laid on a foundation of only the finest selections collected on vinyl that could do the business in every party environment, big room or small. This week though we are hoping to get a look inside their private collections of afterhours beats when they take over this week.

Willi Costa is an underground hero in Brisbane, managing proceedings in Uncle at Family, Press Club, and of course, his appearances here at Sundae with cool deep house, disco and his notorious casual charm. Willi came from a background of disco, rave, post punk, boogie and northern soul, and just Willi’s presence at a party is enough to make it ‘historically memorable’ so we will be looking forward to having Willi back at the controls.

Preferring to shake it in the city’s larger sound systems, Shannon has long been a fixture in the major club circuit. Developing through an intense five year residency at Empire Hotel, and long term engagements with The Family and Therapy, and more recently, Alhambra, The Met and Brunswick Social; his ability to adapt to different party scenarios though have served to cement Shannon’s position as one of the city’s most reliable players.

Haiku is a new direction for Adrian Matyear, previously showing up in notorious establishments like Family, Press Club and Cloudland. Early, late, overnight the Haiku sound is deep, organic, chilled funky house, developed in part at Adrian’s long running Therapy experiment at Barsoma. Haiku had grown up with hip hop, bossa, big band swing, lounge and jazz though so his private collection can indeed present many moods.

Join us this week as three of Brisbane’s favourite Uncles take the reigns at Sundae. Shannon Marshall, Willie Costa and Haiku are experienced spinners both in the city’s nightspots, and down here at Sundae, so we trust they will gently guide the afternoon with a smooth soundtrack. We’ll see you by the riverside.

Sundae 6/10/13 :: Willi Costa + Haiku

We are in the thick of it now! The great Brisbane spring is well and truly in full swing and the Sundae faithful have not been wasting the days with lots of you beautiful party people out in force each week. This week though we are absent our hosts Chantal and Cool Hand Luke while they rock out in Cambodia. Don’t fret, they’ll be back next week. In the meantime local hoodlums Willi Costa and Haiku have staged a coup d’etat of the Sundae turntables for a weekend of boogie beats in the hot hot heat.

The two first came to mainstream attention in Brisbane as members of the highly organised Uncle outfit that occupied the top level of Family. Willi came from a background of disco, rave, post punk, boogie and northern soul, while Haiku had grown up with hip hop, bossa, big band swing, lounge and jazz. While both grew into fine house and techno DJs in the club, we are hoping to get a look inside their private collections of afterhours beats when they take over this week.

We’ve been told to expect a wide range of grooves, from the aforementioned areas to Vegas lounge, cinema soundtracks, muzak and a tiny taste of psychadelia with a few fun bits thrown in between. All keeping to the constant Sundae groove, but with the cheekiness that only these two could get away with. Last time we left the keys with these characters a great day was had by all so we know the party is in good hands. Join Willi Costa and Haiku as they take the controls at Sundae, we’ll see you by the riverside.

Sundae 4/8/13 :: Scott Walker + Willi Costa

The message on the wire from Cool Hand Luke and Chantal is that they’ve arrived at the safe house in Ibiza Town and have set up there temporarily. Their ‘Carmen Sandiego’ trip that they’ve got going on there is coming along nicely and we will no doubt hear more about their adventures soon.

Meanwhile, back at Sundae Brisbane, we’ve got things humming, this week under the careful guidance of two of Brisbane’s finest DJs in Willi Costa and Scott Walker. Laying it out on the turntables only we are having a good old fashioned Sundae Vinyl Throwdown. But first we’re going to check in and see what we’re in for.

Willi Costa is an underground hero in Brisbane, managing proceedings in Uncle at Family, Press Club, and of course, his appearances here at Sundae with cool deep house, disco and his notorious casual charm. Just Willi’s presence at a party is enough to make it ‘historically memorable’ so we will be looking forward to having Willi back at the controls.

Scott Walker is known to many of us here too as a professional man about town, personally tending to gatherings with Auditree, Drop, Empire, Family and Barsoma and so on with suitable flair and untouchable track selection. The man likes to get down with the chilled out sound too so we can expect some fine hip hop, funk, boogie and what not to get everyone swaying.

With Scott Walker and Willi Costa supervising each other- what could go wrong? I can’t believe we left the keys with these characters. In summary, the party is in good hands, we think, and a cool heap of chilled out funky business is coming your way. All on wax for our Vinyl Throwdown. Great stuff. We’ll see you by the riverside.

Sundae 7/2/10 :: Willi Costa

What can I say about Willie Costa a.k.a. Andrew Williamson that isn’t already urban legend! Another English ex-pat and good mate who has a work hard play hard attitude that has kept him in place in the high rankings in Unkle bar at The Family for many years now. Willie has had turntables longer than most people care to think back and we are sure he will enjoy digging through his wealth of tunes to pull together an exciting Sundae set. Wether it’s driving ice-cream trucks, operating smoke machines or playing beach volleyball Willie always gives 100% (inside joke) See you in the sunshine!!
